Soccer News: BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, will be renamed “Christine Sinclair Place” for one night next week in honor of the Canadian captain’s final match with the women’s international team, Canada Soccer announced Monday (27 /11).
Sinclair, who is the country’s all-time leading international scorer, announced her retirement from Canada’s women’s national team in October and her final match will be Dec. 5 against Australia.
“Christine’s career legacy endures and will endure beyond her incredible achievements on the pitch,” Canada Soccer President Charmaine Crooks said in a press release.
“The renaming of BC Place for its final game is a fitting tribute given its origins in the region and the iconic moment at the venue that we celebrate together as a nation.”
The stadium’s renaming will be one of many tributes to Christine Sinclair throughout the evening, including the venue being lit up in red and white with the number 12.
The 40-year-old Sinclair’s international career includes a record 190 goals for Canada’s women’s national team, an Olympic gold medal and six appearances at the Women’s World Cup.
Sinclair still plans to play club soccer for the Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Soccer League next season and after that, he hopes to stay involved in soccer in another capacity, as a coach.
