Canadian Sikhs demonstrate in front of the Indian embassy

As quoted by Malaysian mailOn Tuesday (9/26), around a hundred protesters gathered in Toronto burned Indian flags and hit posters depicting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In Vancouver, around 200 protesters gathered in front of the Indian consulate. Meanwhile, in Ottawa, hundreds of people also gathered outside the office of the Indian High Commissioner waving yellow flags reading “Khalistan” in reference to their support for the independence of Punjab in India and for his support of the Canadian government.

“We are truly grateful to Justin Trudeau. We are sparing no effort to denounce this despicable act. “Canada must put pressure on India to stop killing innocent people in the future,” said one of the protesters in Ottawa, Reshma Singh Bolina.

Trudeau revealed last week that intelligence agencies were investigating credible allegations of Indian agents' involvement in the shooting of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, also a 45-year-old Canadian citizen, in June.

India itself has rejected Trudeau's accusations as unreasonable and warned its citizens to exercise caution in the country, due to rising anti-India activities in Canada.

Canada is home to 770,000 Sikhs, the largest number outside of Punjab, their native Indian state. The shooting of the Sikh activist sparked tensions between the Indian and Canadian governments and sparked a series of protests.

India has dismissed Trudeau's allegations as “absurd” and warned travelers against “anti-Indian activities” in Canada, although without providing concrete evidence.

The Canadian government has continued to gather intelligence for months to investigate the Nijjar case and is cooperating with the United States to indicate the possible involvement of Indian agents in the matter.
