German League News: 20-year-old Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies has now officially been named the 2020 Canadian Player of the Year. He earned this award with his extraordinary performance in the 2019/20 season.
Last season he was a key player as Bayern managed to win the 2019/20 treble, winning the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and European Champions League. Thanks to his actions, he also received the title of 2019/20 Bundesliga Rookie of the Season and was included in the list of nominees for the UEFA Team of the Year.
Initially, Davies was used to fill Bayern Munich’s backline which was going through a player crisis. However, unexpectedly, the opportunity given to him was used optimally, until he proved his qualities as a full-back.
He is also considered to have made Canadian football proud, even though he is actually an immigrant from Ghana.
“Seeing what Alphonso Davies has achieved this year is a great inspiration for the next generation of players,” said John Herdman, head coach of the Canadian national team, as reported by the BavarianFootballWorks page.
“His achievements raised the flag of our sport higher than anyone in our lifetime on the men’s side, and he helped put this country on the world map as a football nation,” he continued.
Unfortunately, in the 2020/21 season, Davies was unable to prove his quality, as he had to miss out for quite a long time due to an ankle injury.
