In a statement released on Saturday (15/1), Joly said his party would strengthen efforts to prevent Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine.
“The reinforcement of Russian troops and equipment in and around Ukraine endangers security throughout the region. These aggressive actions must be avoided,” Joly was quoted as saying. Reuters.
He said Canada would work with its international partners to maintain the rules-based international order.
During his visit, Joly will meet Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmygal. He will also visit a Canadian training mission of 200 people in Ukraine since 2015.
Joly will also meet NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels during his week-long trip.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke last week with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Trudeau stressed that any military attack on Ukraine would have serious consequences, including coordinated sanctions.
Moscow has stationed more than 100,000 troops near the border with Ukraine. The United States said Russia was preparing a pretext to attack if diplomacy failed to achieve its goals.
Canada, which has a large and politically influential Ukrainian population, has taken a tough stance toward Moscow since its annexation of Crimea in 2014.
