Argentina opens Copa America 2024 with victory, Canada beats 2-0

HOLOPIS.COM, JAKARTA – Argentina successfully defeated Canadian resistance in the opening match of the Copa America 2024, with a score of 2-0 without reply.

It is known that the match between Argentina and Canada itself took place at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Friday (6/21) morning WIB.

In the match, Argentina, superior in terms of squad depth, was aggressive from the start of the first half. Team Tango had a chance in the fifth minute thanks to Leandro Paredes, but his shot from outside the penalty area still deflected past the Canadian goal.

Shortly after, Argentina again threatened with a counter-attack, Angel Di Maria managed to fire a shot towards the Canadian goal, which was stopped by goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau.

Canada could only rely on counter-attacks in their match, but their best chance did not arrive until the 43rd minute through Stephen Eustaquio, but his header was parried by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. There was a ball thrown but it was not used as a goal. The first half ended with a score of points.

Argentina then managed to score a goal four minutes into the second half, Julian Alvarez was able to take advantage of the chaos and eventually scored a goal.

In the 66th minute, Argentina again threatened to counterattack due to an error by a Canadian player. Lionel Messi recovers the ball, but his shot is stopped by Crépeau, even one-on-one.

There was a rebound at that point, but Messi’s attempt didn’t pay off, as the Canadian defender quickly clipped the loose ball.

Lionel Messi then almost scored again in the 82nd minute, but his shot went wide of the Canadian goal.

Argentina also made substitutions, including Lautaro Martinez. Apparently, the presence of the Inter Milan prop had a sweet ending for the Tango team.

Lautaro Martinez managed to double the score in the 88th minute with a close range shot after using a through ball from Lionel Messi.

Until the final whistle, the score remained 2-0 for Argentina’s victory.

Thus, this victory places Argentina at the top of Group A with three points and a two-goal gap.
