Sports League – Basketball News: Canada won the 2017 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup title for the first time after defeating Italy 79-60 in the final on Sunday (9/7) in the Egyptian capital, Cairo. Previously, Canada made history by defeating the United States in the semi-finals.
In this game, RJ Barrett dominated the game and managed to collect 18 points and 12 rebounds for Canada’s victory. Meanwhile, the Italian team was led by David Okeke who played extraordinary and had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Unfortunately his efforts were in vain.
Barrett was named the Most Valuable Player or MPV awarded by Tissot. This means Barret is part of the All-Star Five and will be joined by Lorenzo Bucarelli (Italy), Abu Kigab (Canada), Tommaso Oxilia (Italy) and Payton Pritchard (United States).
“You’re at the top of that podium and you know you’ve won everything,” Barrett said in a conference call from Cairo. “This has never happened before and I think some of us don’t even know how to do it. “It’s always wonderful to hear our national anthem, and to hear it in such a special context.”
“I think everyone has calmed down,” Barret said. “Just incredible energy, pride and emotion. Difficult to explain. It’s hard to describe.”
Earlier in the day, the United States claimed the final spot on the podium, after defeating Spain by a score of 96-72. The United States comes in third place. The United States has already had to endure embarrassments after being beaten by Canada in the semi-finals.
