Transfer News: Liverpool Women have announced the signing of Canadian national team player Olivia Smith from Sporting CP. The 19-year-old is capable of playing in midfield and across the attacking line.
Smith arrives at Liverpool Women after a sensational first season as a professional in Portugal with Sporting.
She was named the Campeonato Nacional Feminino Young Player of the Year after scoring 13 goals and providing 9 assists in 18 league appearances, helping her team qualify for the Women’s Champions League by finishing second behind Benfica.
After officially joining, Olivia Smith expressed her delight: “Now I’m finally here, I get to see a bit of Liverpool, I really like it and I’m really excited. It’s definitely a prestigious club overall and also for my dad, it’s really important to him, it’s a club he’s watched and followed since he was young, so it’s great to be a part of that and have this opportunity.”
Smith also added about his hopes at the new club: “I think it’s very exciting because we’ve got a very young squad and last season they were exceptional. I’m delighted to be part of that team.”
At international level, Smith has recorded impressive achievements. He became Canada’s youngest player to make his debut at the age of 15 years and 94 days in November 2019 and has to date earned 10 senior caps.
Smith also competed at the 2023 Women’s World Cup and was awarded Young Player of the Tournament at the Concacaf W Gold Cup earlier this year.
