With a thrilling win over world No. 4 Anders Antonsen of Denmark, promising Indian badminton player Priyanshu Rajawat took his incredible run at the Canada Open to the semi-finals. Ranked No. 39 in the world, Rajawat fought hard against Antonsen and eventually prevailed 21-11, 17-21, 21-19 in a tight contest that lasted an hour and nineteen minutes.

With his victory over Antonsen, Rajawat, 22, earned his first-ever win against a player ranked in the top 10. In the semi-finals, he will face Frenchman Alex Lanier. Rajawat will be appearing in his second World Tour Super 500 semi-final.

Treesa-Gayatri bows out

Unfortunately, the women’s doubles team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand suffered a defeat in their quarter-final match. The third-seeded Indian team lost to Pei Shan Hsieh and En-Tzu Hung of Chinese Taipei 18-21, 21-19, 16-21.

Rajawat is the only Indian player left in the tournament after other Indian players lost. In the previous rounds, he beat higher ranked opponents like Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke, ranked 24th, and Japan’s Takuma Obayashi, ranked 33rd. Rajawat will now look to upset another top shuttler, France’s Alex Lanier, in the semi-final.
