Lionel Messi ready for Copa America semi-final against Canada

TIMEINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Coach Lionel Scaloni confirms Argentina captain Lionel Messi fit and ready to face Canada in the semi-finals of the Copa America 2024, Thursday (9/7/2024) tomorrow.

Messi, who played the entire match in the quarter-final against Ecuador, reportedly suffered a muscle injury. The 37-year-old looked less powerful in a match that went to penalties.

Previously, Messi had even missed the last match of the group stage due to injury.

“Leo (Messi) is fine, he finished well, so tomorrow he will play in the match, we are calm,” Scaloni told a news conference ahead of the semi-final match at MetLife Stadium. “The levels seem good. He is important for us.

Argentina and Canada will meet for the second time in the tournament after their Group A opener, where the defending champions beat the CONCACAF team 2-0. Tango’s winning goal was scored by Messi and Lautaro Martinez.

Scaloni said this time he would try “something different” in his second meeting with Canada.

“All coaches are determined to correct mistakes and hurt our opponents,” the 46-year-old said. “Every coach has to do something different. We will try to control the ball and stop them from playing their game.”

Scaloni added that his team will try to counter Canada’s physical and aggressive play, fresh off a penalty shootout win over Venezuela.
