Canada is preparing for a major Copa America semifinal against Argentina on Tuesday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., which coach Jesse Marsh likened to a battle between David and Goliath.
Argentina, the 2022 World Cup winners, are the reigning World Cup champions and sit first in the FIFA rankings, while Canada is ranked 48th in the world and is competing in the tournament for the first time.
“They’ve only lost twice in five years,” Marsh said of Argentina. “(Lionel) Messi is the best player that’s ever played. But we think we have a chance and that’s how we prepare.
Despite losing 2-0 to Argentina in their opening match, in which Messi provided two assists for goals by Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez, Canada is confident of a semi-final spot after beating Venezuela on penalties.
“We know how good Argentina are because we’ve played them, but we’ve also had success,” Marsh told reporters. “I said after the game (against Venezuela) that we might have played a perfect game and even that might not be enough.”
