F1 News: Max Verstappen says his opening day of testing for the Canadian F1GP was “definitely not what I wanted” after his efforts in mixed conditions were hampered by technical issues.
After completing the top five in wet/dry FP1, Max Verstappen managed just four laps – leaving him 18th on the timesheet – in wet/dry FP2. This was caused by a suspected energy recovery system issue that developed within his RB20 early in the session, forcing him to return to the pits and on the radio he commented:
“Can you get a fan? I smelled a bit of smoke.” Asked after the session about Friday’s distractions and the problems with his car, the reigning world champion replied: “Yes, unfortunately in FP2 I didn’t get many laps.
“There was a suspected electrical problem so they told me to box and they’re investigating now. I’m not back in the garage yet but I’m sure we’ll know what it is soon.” He continued: “It’s not ideal. I want to do more laps. “Some of the other guys have done a few more laps in the dry, and now a few more laps in the wet.”
“It’s definitely not something I wanted to do in FP2, but I think it’s more important to know what actually happened and what implications it will have for this weekend or the rest of the year.”
Verstappen’s team-mate Sergio Perez finished 10th on Friday as he pondered what lay ahead for the rest of the weekend – with the rain expected to continue.
