Jakarta (ANTARA) – Canada will try to repeat the success of Mexico and Honduras by finishing third at the Copa America.
Canada will face Uruguay in the third-place match of the Copa America 2024 at Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, next Sunday at 07:00 WIB.
Canada has the opportunity to become the third Concacaf (North and Central America) country to finish third at the Copa America.
Mexico has achieved it three times in 1997, 1999 and 2007, while Honduras in 2001.
Mexico beat Peru in the race for third place at the 1997 Copa America in Bolivia thanks to a lone goal from striker Luis Hernández.
Two years later, Mexico retained third place at the 1999 Copa America in Paraguay. El Tri beat Chile 2-1 thanks to goals from Juan Pelencia and Miguel Zepeda.
At the 2001 Copa America in Colombia, it was Honduras’ turn to create a surprise by finishing third in the tournament.
Replacing Argentina and Canada who withdrew before the start of the tournament, Honduras finished in third place after beating Uruguay on penalties 5-4 following a 2-2 draw in the third-place match.
Six years later, the Concacaf team again finished third at the 2007 Copa America in Venezuela after Mexico beat Uruguay 3-1 thanks to goals from Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Omar Bravo and Jose Guardado.
Mexico is the only Concacaf team to go further than third place, having been runners-up in 1993 and 2001.
