Paris 2024 Olympics – -Canadian, Spanish women’s soccer win opening match

Women’s football at the 2024 Paris Olympics kicked off matches on Thursday evening (25/7) WIB.

A total of eight-six matches across three groups were played, with the opening being between Canada and New Zealand in Group A and Spain against Japan in Group C, according to the official website of the 2024 Olympics.

The 2020 Olympic gold medal-winning team Canada successfully beat New Zealand 2-1 in their opening group stage match at Stade Geoffrey-Guichard.

New Zealand took the lead through Mackenzie Barry’s goal after just 13 minutes.

However, Canada was still too strong for New Zealand after turning the tables. Canada’s equaliser was scored by Cloé Lacasse in the first half on a penalty kick.

Canada’s winning goal came in the 79th minute. Jessie Fleming fired in a cross that Evelyn Viens finished off from a tight angle. The game ended 2-1 in favour of Canada over New Zealand.

In another Group A match, hosts France narrowly won 3-2 against Colombia. This result puts France and Canada in the top two places in the provisional Group A standings.

Meanwhile, Spain pulled off a 2-1 comeback against Japan in their Group C opener at the Stade de la Beaujoire.

Japan opened the scoring in the 13th minute through a free kick from Aoba Fujino which found the top right corner of the Spanish goal guarded by Cata Coll.

2023 Women’s Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati equalised for Spain nine minutes later after finishing off Athenea del Castillo’s through ball.

Spain dominated possession in the second half and managed to turn the advantage around in the 74th minute through Mariona Caldentey’s kick after receiving Bonmati’s cross. Spain successfully won their opening match.

The result temporarily puts Spain top of Group C with three points, followed by Brazil who also won 1-0 against Nigeria in the other match.

The German national team also started the 2024 Olympic tournament with a convincing 3-0 win against Australia in the opening match of Group B. Three German goals were scored by Marina Hegering, Lea Schueller and Jule Brand.
