LigaSports – Badminton News: Former Japanese world badminton player Kento Momota seems to have started to show his prowess after he managed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 2017 Canada Open tournament by defeating a player from the Netherlands, Mark Caljouw.

Mark Caljouw, who is the 12th seed, had to acknowledge the superiority of Kento Momota, who is an unseeded player, with two consecutive games 21-17 and 21-18 in 43 minutes.

This is the first meeting of the two players in an official tournament. In the first match, Momota always managed to control the game and was always ahead and was only overtaken when he won the first game with 21-17.

However, in the second game, Momota struggled to accept the attacks of Mark Caljouw, who tended to be aggressive and continued to pressure Momota until he managed to take the lead at the break with 8-11.

After the comeback, Momota managed to hit Mark Caljouw with continuous attacks and managed to catch up and take the lead until he won the second game with 21-18 and crushed Mark Caljouw’s resistance to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2017 Canadian Open.

Meanwhile, an upset came after young South Korean player Jeon Hyeok Jin beat Indian second seed HS Prannoy with three games 17-21, 21-14 and 21-13 to advance to the quarter-finals.

HS Prannoy, who in the 2017 Indonesia Open Super Series Premier tournament defeated Rio 2016 Olympic silver and gold medalists Lee Chong Wei and Chen Long, appeared to run out of energy in the deciding game, so Jeon was able to continue and win the 61-minute match.

Meanwhile, in the women’s singles sector, a surprise occurred after American top seed Zhang Beiwen squandered a 6-point lead in the second game and eventually had to pick up a three-game defeat with 21-16, 22-24 and 11-21 against the young Japanese player, Saena Kawakami.
