Copa America: Canada, beginner, beats Venezuela and qualifies for the semi-finals

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Canadian national team eliminated the Venezuelan national team in the quarterfinals of the Copa America USA 2024 at the AT&T Cowboys Stadium, to advance to the semifinals as a debutant team.

Canada, led by star Alphonse Davies, eliminated a perfect Venezuela in the group stage with a score of 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

In this match, Canada played well by endangering Venezuela’s goal guarded by goalkeeper Rafael Romo.

In the 11th minute, Canada had three consecutive golden chances. However, nothing resulted in a goal as it was blocked by Romo and the Venezuelan defender.

A minute later, the goal the Canucks were looking for finally materialized when Jacob Shaffelburg took advantage of his partner’s acceleration in the penalty area. Score 1-0 for Canada.

In the 23rd minute, Shaffelburg had another dangerous chance. He threatened Venezuela’s goal and almost scored a brace. However, his right kick was still blocked by Romo.

Vinotinto has not remained silent. They then increased their attacks and only managed to get results in the second half.

After Eduard Bello’s chance was denied in the 57th minute, Venezuela finally broke six minutes later thanks to their main striker Salomon Rondon.

Rondon scored a goal after winning his duel with a Canadian defender in a one-on-one in midfield.

After winning the duel, the former Premier League striker did not hesitate for long to shoot from distance when he saw Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau coming out of his nest.

Rondon’s shot crossed the Canadian goal to tie the score. The goal was Rondon’s seventh Copa America goal with Venezuela and allowed him to overtake the record holder previously held by José Luis Dolgetta with six goals.

The scoreline ended at 1-1 in regulation time and the match went to a penalty shootout.

In this round, both of Canada’s and Venezuela’s executions on the first five kickers failed. From Veenzuela, Yangel Herrera and Jefferson Savarino were the two executors who failed to fulfill their duties, while from Canada they were Liam Miller and Stephen Eustaquio.

On the sixth kick, Wilker Angel’s kick was saved and the favorable situation for Canada was finally resolved by Ismael Kone who coolly beat Romo.

In the semifinals, Canada awaits defending champion and 2022 World Cup champion Argentina on Wednesday (10/7) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
