Copa America News 2024: Canada coach Jesse Marsch said he appreciated the opportunity to face a team like Argentina ahead of the Copa America 2024 semi-finals on Tuesday evening (09/07 ), local time, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The rookie team opened the tournament against defending champions Argentina last month. Marsch expressed his belief that his team has improved a lot since that first encounter and believes that facing Argentina again at this stage would be a big step forward for his team.
“It’s an incredible opportunity to continue to show further growth. It’s not about how we can beat Argentina, but how we can appreciate our development path and where we are going and test ourselves to a very high level,” Jesse Marsch said in a statement. press conference Monday (08/07).
“Argentina are the best team in the world and you can see how aggressive and sharp they are, how great Messi is. There are things we did well when we played against them. I think that knowing their level and quality will be an advantage for us,” he added.
Marsch, the 50-year-old American who took charge of the Canadian team in May after being sacked by Leeds United, defied all odds with a historic performance at the prestigious continental event.
As the lowest-ranked team in Group A, ahead of Peru and Chile, they reached the quarter-finals, where they drew 1–1 against Venezuela before winning on penalties.
“I never doubted my abilities as a coach, but what I always doubted about this business was how to find the right people to work with,” Marsch said.
“I feel at home here. I feel how much they want me here, I want to start loving this game again and this team helped me find that.”
