EXCLUSIVE: Guntur Bay creator Ryan McMahon has signed a first-look development deal with Canadian production house Attraction.
The partnership will see Attraction and McMahon – investigative journalist, director, host and producer – develop a series of “original, thought-provoking and impactful content across a variety of media”, including film and television.
McMahon’s work often explores complex narratives and amplifies marginalized voices, with a strong focus on Indigenous issues, identities and experiences. He is best known for his docuseries Guntur Baywhich recently won two Canadian Screen Awards. The investigative program, launching on streamer Crave in February 2023, is adapted from McMahon’s 2018 podcast Canadaland and explores the death of an Indigenous teenager in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

For Toronto-based Attraction, the deal is the first step in a strategy to generate talent-led unscripted content featuring creators from Canada and abroad. This also allows content to be delivered in English in a variety of genres and formats. This company is famous for films like MAD And Murder Inc.., as well as series such as Prime Video, Netflix, Parampunt+ and Warner Bros. Discovery, and recently won the Innovative Producer of the Year award in Banff.
