US and Canadian navies sail together through the Taiwan Strait

The United States and Canada said their military ships crossed the Taiwan Strait together on Sunday (10/20/2024).

The US Navy’s 7th Fleet said the destroyer USS Higgins and the Royal Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Vancouver were “conducting routine transits through the Taiwan Strait.”

It said the ships sailed “through a corridor of high seas in a strait located outside the territorial sea of ​​any coastal state.”

The 7th Fleet said: “The United States rejects any assertion of sovereignty or jurisdiction inconsistent with freedom of navigation, overflight, and other lawful uses of the sea and air. »

Canadian Joint Operations Command said: “Our activities promote peace and security in the Indo-Pacific. »

China’s East China Command said in a statement that U.S. and Canadian actions would destroy peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The command expressed its determination to defend China’s sovereignty and security as well as regional peace and stability.

The announcement from the United States and Canada comes a week after China held large-scale military exercises in the waters around Taiwan.
