3 people injured in attack during Friday prayers at Canadian mosque

Trenton, Canada (ANTARA) – Three people were injured while trying to disarm a man armed with a knife before Friday prayers at a mosque in the Montreal area, Canada.

A Châteauguay police spokesperson told reporters that the victims had minor injuries, but that one of them had to be transported to hospital.

Police said the injured victim was around 50 years old.

They were able to arrest the suspect until police arrived on scene.

About 100 men, women and children were inside the Muslim Cultural Center in Châteauguay, Quebec, when mosque administrator Richid Amane said a man acted suspiciously after entering the mosque, according to a CTV News report.

Several men approached the suspect and were injured in the hands, while one of the victims was injured in the body.

The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), Canada’s largest non-profit Muslim organization, asked the public to wait for more information before drawing conclusions.

“We are aware and deeply concerned,” the NCCM wrote on the X platform.

“We are in contact with the local office and will provide further information as it becomes available.”

“However, at this time we have no information to suggest what the motive for this incident was, and we urge our community not to speculate while the investigation is ongoing,” he said. he added.

A 24-year-old suspect was arrested on site.

Police said investigators were questioning the suspect.

He will likely be charged and is expected to appear in court on Saturday (9/21).
