Tennis News: Bianca Andreescu’s 2022 season may have started a bit late, but the former world No. 4 is looking forward to finishing the season in convincing fashion.

The Canadian handed Liudmila Samsonova her second loss in her last 20 matches after the 2019 US Open champion beat world number 23 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 in the Open first round from San Diego.

Samsonova arrived in San Diego in impressive form having won three of her last four tournaments, including her last in Tokyo.

“It was a very difficult match and the result could have ended otherwise,” admits Andreescu. “I felt towards the end of the game that I was putting a bit more pressure on him and was a bit more consistent.”

In her first tournament since losing the US Open third round, the Canadian continued to put pressure on Samsonova’s service game, including creating 15 break point chances. He was ahead by a set and a break chance before the world No. 23 could force the decider. The Canadian opened the third set with a 2-0 lead and held on to claim victory after 2 hours 38 minutes.

The world No. 57’s victory solidified his decision to skip tournaments outside of the Americas after the US Open to focus on his fitness and continue training.

“After the US Open, I rested for a few days, maybe a week in Costa Rica, a place that makes me happy. I don’t play any tournaments, I just train,” Andreescu said.

“I just want to have a longer pre-season, rather than just playing tournaments. I want to do a good training session because this summer I was not feeling very well, with my back and a few other things. So I don’t want to go to Europe and come back here because the goal is to play in Guadalajara and I don’t want to travel too much.”

In the second round of the San Diego Open, Andreescu has the opportunity to face one of the host players, namely the sixth seed, Cori Gauff or Robin Montgomery.

In other action, host Louisa Chirico booked her San Diego Open second round match against second seed Paula Badosa with a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 victory over her compatriot Alison Riske.
