In Canada in particular, many citizens do not want a foreign monarch to represent their country, despite deep historical ties to Britain.
Currently, Canada is a member of the Commonwealth of Countries of the Former British Empire. They make the King/Queen of England the Head of State.
Canada’s ties to the British Empire are very close, as evidenced by dozens of city names that resemble the British Empire, such as the City of London and Windsor.
But, according to an April 2020 poll published by the Angus Reid Institute, 51% of Canadians do not want the monarchy to continue.
Only 26% of respondents wanted Canada to keep the Queen as head of state. While the remaining 24% said they were unsure.
Moreover, according to a poll recently released by Leger on Tuesday (9/13), around 77% of Canadians said they did not feel attached to the British monarchy.
As charged Reutersa resident of the predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec, feels a lack of kinship with the British.
This is also supported by an Angus Reid poll showing that 71% of Quebecers no longer see the need for a monarchy. Meanwhile, a Leger poll said 87 per cent also did not feel attached to the royal family.
A fifth of Canada’s population is made up of newcomers with few ties to Britain, and Indigenous peoples tend to be less inclined towards colonial rule, as their activists tore down a statue of the Queen in Manitoba in 2021 .
Even so, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did not respond to anything that indicated the government’s tendency to change the political system.
Trudeau said only that Canada’s democratic system will always be healthy and that changing the system is not a priority because his country is now preoccupied with more important things related to climate and the economy.
