U.S. and Indonesia Partner to Accelerate Development in Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – United States via YOU SAID and the Ministry of National Development Planning (Kementerian PPN/Bappenas) launched on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 the new initiative of the Collaborative Governance Program in Papua or “USAID Kolaborasi”. This program aims to accelerate development in the provinces of Papua and West Papua.

The USAID collaboration is a five-year, $10 million (Rs 155 billion) initiative to support the Accelerated Development Papua Master Plan (RIPPP). This plan aims to strengthen cooperation with development partners, businesses and other stakeholders.

This program is also intended to help the province Papua and West Papua to implement the Special Self-Reliance Fund to provide maximum benefits to the people of Papua and West Papua. This collaboration is also expected to improve the quality of public services and improve the skills of local government institutions to oversee budget allocation and implementation, as well as engage the people of Papua and West Papua.

“This new collaboration with Bappenas shows our commitment to supporting the Indonesian government in achieving a prosperous Papua region. The USAID collaboration promotes collaborative governance in Papua and West Papua by increasing local government capacity and Orang Asli Papua (OAP) involvement in local development,” said Jeff Cohen, director of the USAID Indonesia.

Taufik Hanafi, Secretary of the Ministry of National Development Planning/Primary Secretary of Bappenas, said that strengthening cooperation between the Indonesian government and USAID under the collaborative program will play an important role in mobilizing resources. program and funding to focus more on achieving development goals in the RIPPP.

The United States is committed to partnering with Indonesia to address important development challenges. USAID hopes to expand its close relationship with Bappenas and work with other local partners such as Cendrawasih University and the University of Papua to improve governance functions and accountability in Papua and West Papua.
