Fadel Muhammad: The MPR Global Forum as a form of support for the Indonesian G20 Presidency

MPR Vice President Prof Dr Ir Fadel Mohammad said that holding an international conference as part of the establishment of the MPR Global Forum is a form of MPR RI’s support for Indonesia’s leadership in the G20, a multilateral cooperation forum made up of 19 countries main and of the European Union (EU).

For the first time, Indonesia holds the chairmanship of the Group of 20 (G20), a cooperation forum for 20 of the world’s major economies. The Indonesian presidency period lasts for one year, from December 1, 2021 to November 20, 2022. The G20 represents the world’s economic and political power with its membership composition covering 80% of global GDP, 75% of global exports and 60% of global population. According to Fadel Muhammad, the G20 summit or summit is not only a meeting of Heads of State (executive), but also meetings attended by parliamentary (legislative) leaders, such as the G20 Parliamentary Leaders Meeting (P20) sometime ago.

“We want the G20 meeting not only among the executives, but also the legislature (parliament) to be involved in the activities of the G20. Thus, we are organizing an international conference to be attended by the leaders of the deliberative assembly or shuro assembly of Islamic Cooperation member states in Bandung from October 24-26 ahead of the G20 summit in Bali in December,” the former two-term governor Gorontalo said.

By holding this international conference attended by the presidents of the deliberative assembly or syuro assembly, continued Fadel Muhammad, the Indonesian MPR should have international relations in the parliamentary field, especially for the upper house. “Thus, our main goal is to support Indonesia’s G20 Presidency, and furthermore, we hope that the establishment of this MPR Global Forum will become a legacy for the current and future MPR RI,” he said.

Fadel Muhammad revealed that the MPR Global Forum or another name agreed upon later would not overlap with existing parliamentary forums. “Later we will see the form of this forum so that it does not overlap with other parliamentary forums. The MPR Global Forum, or another name to be agreed by the heads of the deliberative assembly or shuro assembly of Member States of Islamic Cooperation, will talk more about cooperation between the Consultative Assemblies and issues of world peace,” he said.

Fadel added that the creation of the Global Forum of MPRs received the support of member countries of Islamic Cooperation.

“When we (the leaders of the MPR) invited the ambassadors of the Member States of Islamic Cooperation some time ago, they supported the establishment of this Global Forum of the MPR and they agreed to invite the heads of the deliberative assemblies or shuro assemblies of their respective countries to attend international conferences in Bandung”, added the vice-president of the MPR of the DPD group.

The People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia invited the chairman of the deliberative assembly or shuro assembly from the member countries of Islamic Cooperation, which has more than 50 countries. Fadel said a number of countries have confirmed their participation in an international conference as part of the establishment of the Global Forum on MPRs in Bandung. “I hope all countries can attend,” he said.

The holding of an international conference as part of the establishment of this World Forum of MPRs, added Fadel Mohammad, also received support from various parties, including the Ministry of Public Enterprises. “Chief PMR met the Minister of SOE, Erick Thohir, who supported the holding of an international conference within the framework of the creation of this World Forum on RPMs. We hope that the holding of the international conference in which the leaders of the deliberative assembly or shuro assembly of the member countries of Islamic cooperation are participating can go smoothly,” he concluded.
