Tennis News: Passionate tennis player Felix Auger Aliassime has passed the biggest test of his career so far at the Swiss Indoors in Basel for the 2022 season.
The Canadian tennis player put in a stunning performance beating world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 in the semi-finals of the Swiss Indoors.
The third seed has regularly kept top-seeded Alcaraz under pressure with stunning shots from the end zone, while demonstrating some of the tough serves that have defined his journey in European hard-court indoor tournaments until now.
“So far everything has been almost perfect in Basel,” exclaimed Auger Aliassime, who has dropped just one set in Basel this season.
“I’ve served wonderfully. There’s still a game to go but it’s been a fantastic week so far. I’ve played some awesome games and again against the best in the world. It’s a great win so I’m really happy with my level of play and I hope I can continue until the end.”
The win further cemented the 2022 Florence Open champion’s position in the ATP Race to Turin standings with 3,435 points. He is only five points ahead of Andrey Rublev who is in sixth position.
The 2022 season champion Antwerp went on the gas immediately at the start of the game, including when he took control of the game in the eighth game when he beat the 2022 season US Open champion , Alcaraz without reply. The National stayed strong to win the first set before getting two more break opportunities to seal the victory. Thanks to the victory, he now increasingly dominates their head to head with 3-0.
“I played well again. Show up and focus on my serve game by game. I think it was quite a tense start for both of us. But I think I can put a lot of pressure on him and I think that he feels it,” added Auger Aliassime.
“From then on, I was able to get a lot of chances. In the second set, I got free points and I was able to use them well.”
The contested 82-minute win took the Canadian to 12 straight wins, including victories in Florence and Antwerp. From now on, he will aim for a third consecutive title against Roberto Bautista Agut or Holger Rune in the final of the Swiss Indoors.
“It’s great. I didn’t expect it, when I was in Florence three weeks ago or after the US Open. I feel really happy that all my hard work is paying off,” Auger said. Aliassime.
“I always believed that I could play like that, that I could be consistent, but first I believed in it and then I really did. Hopefully this is the start for me to play like that.”
