Deja vu 1986, these 5 similarities lead the Argentinian national team to win the 2022 World Cup?

Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – World Cup 2022 resembles the 1986 edition. This has led to speculation Argentina will be champions like 36 years ago.

The Argentina national team have confirmed their ticket to the 2022 World Cup final after facing Croatia 3-0 in the semi-finals on Wednesday (14/12/2022) early morning WIB.

Argentina’s three goals against Croatia were scored by Julian Alvarez (2 goals) and Lionel Messi. With this result, the Tango team should win the 2022 World Cup.

The last time Argentina won the World Cup was in the 1986 edition. Interestingly, there are similarities between the 1986 World Cup and the 2022 World Cup.

Here are the similarities between the 1986 World Cup and the 2022 World Cup:

World Cup already seen 1998 in 2022

1. Morocco Group Champion

At the 2022 World Cup, Morocco created an upset by winning Group F after beating Belgium (2-0) and Canada (2-1), and drawing 0-0 against Croatia.

In fact, Morocco recorded a similar feat in 1986. At that time, the Atlas Lions recorded one win and two draws in a group surrounded by European teams: England, Poland and Portugal.

Since the 1986 World Cup, Morocco have played four other editions, but have failed each time in the group stage. It was only at the 2022 World Cup that Morocco qualified and even reached the semi-finals and had a chance to qualify for the final.

2. Belgium qualify in three group stages

Bolstered by star players, Belgium are set to qualify for the 2022 World Cup group stage. Ironically, the Red Devils have fallen to third place in Group E.

It was the same as the 1986 World Cup when Belgium lost to Mexico, Paraguay and Iraq. Belgium also had to settle for third place and failed to qualify.

3. Containment of the Canada Group

The Canadian national team first appeared at the 1986 World Cup. After that, it took 36 years for Canada to return to compete in the most prestigious tournament in the world.

Canada has recorded similar results at both editions of the World Cup. In 1986, Canada finished last with no points and a -5 goal difference. Meanwhile, in 2022, Canada also recorded 0 points and the same goal difference.

4. Lionel Messi did not execute penalties during the group stage

Lionel Messi missed a penalty in the final game of the 2022 World Cup group stage against Poland.

Looking back, Diego Maradona also failed to score from the exact 12th point against Bulgaria, in the closing match of the 1986 World Cup group stage. Even more interestingly, the two matches ended 2-0 for Argentina’s victory.

5. Brazil fell on penalties in the quarter-finals

Brazil are one of the candidates for victory at the 2022 World Cup, but their steps stopped in the quarter-finals when they met Croatia. The Samba team lost on penalties.

This record is almost the same as that of Brazil in the 1986 World Cup. Both lost on penalties in the quarter-finals, but at that time it was France who eliminated the Selecao.
