Badminton News: With the arrival of the new year, the BWF badminton tournament seems to be expanding its footprint even further.

Increased competition in countries like Canada and Finland promises to be a game changer. At the same time, the start of Olympic qualification in May will give the competition an extra edge in the second half of the season.

The Canadian Open’s new flagship tournament has moved from the Super 300 to the Super 500 this season, which could have a big impact. With Super 500 events attracting top competitors, Canadian audiences are likely to become more engaged in the sport. Canada now has several world-class young players who will have the chance to compete against the best.

The BWF Canada Open in early July will be followed by the US Open. Although it will remain a Super 300 event, timing it right after the Canada Open will ensure a high profile draw, giving spectators the chance to catch the top stars in action.

The Finnish Open (Super 500) in Vantaa in October will see Finland host its biggest World Tour event to date. After successfully hosting the Total Energies BWF Sudirman Cup 2021, Finland’s continued involvement in high-level badminton bodes well for badminton in the region.

At the higher end of the spectrum, increased tournaments in Malaysia, India and Singapore are expected to increase public engagement at the heart of badminton. The PETRONAS Malaysia Open (Super 1000) will open the season on January 10, followed by the YONEX SUNRISE India Open (Super 750), DAIHATSU Indonesia Masters (Super 500) and PUTRI SIRIVANNAVARI Thailand Masters (Super 300) Tour in January and early February before the various continental championships in February.

Data and facts about the upcoming season:

♦ The European leg begins with the YONEX German Open on March 7, followed by the YONEX All England on March 14, and will include the YONEX Swiss Open, Madrid Spain Masters and Orleans Masters, all Super 300 events.

♦ Olympic qualification for Paris 2024 begins on May 1, 2023, increasing the advantage over the qualifying rounds in the second half of the season.

♦ As the Japan Open continues to become a Super 750, the addition of the Japan Masters (Super 500) in November gives fans a second chance to see the stars in action.

♦ The 2023 BWF Total Energy World Championships will be held in Copenhagen, making it the fifth time the event has been held in the city.
