Daniil Medvedev installs Karen Khachanov in Adelaide

Tennis News: Daniil Medvedev’s impressive start to the 2023 season continues at Adelaide International 1 as he steps into the last four.

The world number 7 beat compatriot Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-3 in the Adelaide International 1 quarter-final.

After saving two break point chances at 15/40 to retain her first service game, the third seed put in an impressive performance in her first encounter against Khachanov since 2019. She snatched four straight 2- 3 to win the first set and felt nothing panicked when broken early in the second, having snatched five straight 1-3 games and won after 78 minutes.

“It’s been a while,” Medvedev said of the meeting with Khachanov. “We haven’t played against each other since 2019, it’s been a while. Hopefully we can have more games in the final stages of the tournament. It’s never easy, I I’m happy to have managed to raise my level, especially at the end of the two sets and I’m happy to be in the semi-finals.

A former world number 1, Medvedev is yet to drop a set at the Adelaide International 1. 14 of his 15 titles he has won on hard courts and he hopes to get closer to winning another on these courts when he first faces top seed Novak Djokovic or Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov in the semi-finals.

The other two places in the semi-finals were occupied by Sebastian Korda and Yoshihito Nishioka.

Back-to-back wins over Andy Murray and Roberto Bautista Agut kicked off American Korda’s 2023 season and he won three straight sets as he thrashed Italian Jannik Sinner 7-5 6-1 after 86 minutes.

Unlike Korda, the Japanese tennis player, Nishioka had to fight for 2 hours and 46 minutes. His opponent, world number 120 Alexei Popyrin, knocked down 27 aces in his third career ATP quarter-final, but the two-time world title winner raised the bar in time to claim a 7-6 6-7 6-win. 2.
