David was first identified by the Canadian national youth team program in 2015. This was after attending several under-15 camps and being regularly called up to the Canadian under-17 camp before the 2017 CONCACAF Under-17 Championship.
David went on to represent Canada in the tournament and scored twice against Suriname in the final group match. In May 2018, David was called up to the Canada Under-21 squad for the 2018 Toulon Tournament. David was called up to the USA Under-20 squad by Tab Ramos in 2018. However, he declined the invitation to focus on his club career and because of his desire to represent Canada.

David received his first senior call-up to defend Canada on August 30, 2018. He had a CONCACAF Nations League qualifier against the US Virgin Islands. He made his senior debut in the game on September 9, starting and scoring twice in an 8-0 win.
David was named to the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup final squad on May 30, 2019. In Canada’s final group game against Cuba, he scored a hat-trick in a 7-0 win. Although Canada were knocked out of Haiti in the quarter-finals, David finished the tournament as the Golden Boot winner with six goals.
Following Canada’s 6-0 win over Cuba on September 7, 2019, David set the record for most Canadian senior international goals in a single year with eight goals in 2019. For his efforts, he was awarded the Player 2019 Canadian Male of the Year.
On 8 June 2021, David scored his second hat-trick for Canada in a 4–0 win over Suriname in a 2022 World Cup qualifier. World Cup 2022, David scored a total of nine goals, five of which came in the third and final round. . In November 2022, he was confirmed in the 26-man squad that will go to the 2022 World Cup.
Unfortunately, Canada’s progress in Qatar is less convincing. They were eliminated sooner after swallowing two straight losses in the Group F stage. They first trailed Belgium 0-1, and were humiliated by Croatia 4-1. In other words, the last game against Morocco did not determine their steps to enter the next round.
Gameplay style
A versatile striker, David played as a second striker in a 4–4–2 formation or as an attacking midfielder. He is also capable of playing as an in and out striker and is known for his goalscoring abilities.
As a second striker, he plays right behind the other main strikers. David was able to find flaws in defense and attack this area with his speed, known for his high speed. He is also capable of playing short passes and joining his teammates in attacking the goal area.
He is also capable of playing well with tight control and lively interaction between his teammates. Due to his speed, David is also effective on the counter-attack. Additionally, he is known for his tactical acumen, defensive work rate and ability to read the game, as well as his willingness to pressure opposition players off the ball.
