Defense University professor Hasto Kristiyanto gives a public lecture to hundreds of students from Alauddin State Islamic University (UIN) in Makassar city, South Sulawesi on Tuesday (03/07/2023).
Makassar, Beritasatu.com – Defense University Professor Hasto Kristiyanto called on Indonesian students to ignite the spirit of liberation of the nations of the world from colonialism. According to Hasto, this spirit is the same spirit that was lived by the founding fathers of the nation such as Soekarno-Hatta and others.
This was conveyed by Hasto during a public lecture in front of hundreds of students at Alauddin State Islamic University (UIN) in Makassar City, South Sulawesi on Tuesday (03/07/2023). The theme of the public lecture was “Manifestations of Bung Karno’s Thoughts on Religion and Nationality in the Modern Era”.
“We are independent not only for Indonesia, but to build a new world order based on Pancasila. It takes the same spirit to ignite spirits the same, as Bung Karno, Bung Hatta, KH Agus Salim and others have pointed out. This is also the case with religious leaders who display a distinctive Islam because they are integrated into Indonesian culture,” Hasto said.
According to Hasto, students should have political knowledge and understand the great ideas of the nation’s founders, especially Bung Karno and Bung Hatta. He explained that at the Afro-Asian Islamic Conference in 1965, Bung Karno was awarded the title of “warrior and liberator of Islamic nations”.
He narrated at length the life story of Soekarno, the announcer and the first President of the Republic of Indonesia. Soekarno, he said, became a student studying Islam at HOS Cokroaminoto. Bung Karno also entered Sarekat Islam to fight for the strength of the first organization in Indonesia capable of carrying out a boycott against the Dutch.
Bung Karno also learned from NU personalities, including learning monotheism, from personalities such as KH Hasyim Ashari and KH Ahmad Dahlan.
“It uses the Islamic spirit combined with nationalism, socialism and the dissection of national issues with the method of dialectical materialism for the struggle to achieve independence for Indonesia,” the PDIP secretary general said.
Hasto said there was a realization that Indonesia had experienced colonization as a result of capitalism, colonialism and imperialism to initiate the Afro-Asian Conference (KAA) of 1955. According to him, the indonesia’s independence was to build global brotherhood.
“With the spirit of West Irian liberation, we have nothing. Bung Karno launched the KAA in Bandung, to liberate West Irian and Asian and African nations,” Hasto said.
“There are still many Asian-African nations, especially Muslim nations that are still colonized. We are fighting for their independence not for religious reasons, but because of the constitutional order that independence is the right of all nations, therefore colonialism must be abolished as it is not in accordance with humanity and justice,” he added firmly.
While UIN Chancellor Alauddin Makassar Prof.Dr. Hamdan Juhannis said that Bung Karno was the most important figure ever born in Indonesia. For him, if there were writers who were the most influential people in the world in the 20th century, Soekarno should be in the top 10.
“You know Mahathir Mohammad, don’t you? A character from Malaysia who is often referred to as little Soekarno. So just as big as Mahathir is called little Soekarno. So how big is Soekarno,” said Hamdan Johannis.
He shared his experience while studying for a master’s degree in Montreal, Canada in 1997-1999. At that time, he was talking with Canadians.
“I said I was from Indonesia. He replied, oh Indonesia, Bali. He said his dream was to go to Bali. I asked what else you know about Indonesia? He said Soekarno. So he only knows 2 things about Indonesia, namely Bali and Soekarno,” Hamdan said.
Hamdan spoke about this because he wanted to encourage students to ask themselves what they know about Sukarno.
“Soekarno was a founding father, the initiator of Pancasila as the basis of the state, an accomplished orator, and also a writer,” Hamdan said.
Hamdan even had time to test the students whether they knew the Indonesian publisher, whether they knew of any books written by Sukarno. Out of about 7 students who came forward, three were successful.
According to Hamdan, there are at least six of Soekarno’s most important books, including those containing his religious thoughts.
“The most important thing is that Bung Karno is a Muslim thinker. This is what we want to explore in this public lecture,” Hamdan concluded.
Hundreds of students and scholars from UIN Alauddin Makassar attended the event. Also present were senior PDIP brass from South Sulawesi, led by President Andi Ridwan Wittiri and Secretary Rudi Pieter Goni. Samsu Niang, DPR member of the PDIP faction for South Sulawesi constituency, was also present.
