Chairman of the Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly, Bamsoet appreciates the work of the Indonesian Pensioners Association

The President of the Indonesian MPR Bambang Soesatyo supports the steps of the Association of Indonesian Pensioners (PPI) under the leadership of Prof. Ermaya Suradinata to encourage the government to revise law n°11/1969 on pensions. Because the number of retirees in Indonesia is not a small number.

According to data from the State Personnel Agency (BKN), in the period 2021-2024 alone, around 706,438 state officials retired. This figure excludes the number of retirees who retired before 2021. PPI even estimates that the number of retirees in Indonesia and their families could reach 40 million people.

“Refreshment of the Pensions Act is very important, taking into account various aspects, both budgetary, demographic issues, as well as socio-economic and political dynamics. Given the amount of the value of the benefits and the pensions provided for in Law No. 11 It is not surprising that the impact and benefits have not been optimally felt by pensioners,” Bamsoet said in its statement, Friday (3/17/2023). .

He said this during the commemoration of PPI’s 1st anniversary, at the Lemhannas Dwi Warna Building, Jakarta today. The event was also attended by PPI President Feisal Tamin, PPI President Ermaya Suradinata and PPI Secretary General Masni Rani Mochtar.

Bamsoet explained that based on the Mercer CFA Institute’s report of 44 retirement income systems around the world, Indonesia’s Global Pension Index for 2022 is in the range of 49.2. Smaller than the previous period which reached an index of 50.4. The fall in the value of this index also had an impact on Indonesia’s ranking, which fell to 39th position from the previous period to 35th.

“According to a study by Citigroup, even developed countries also face problems related to pensions. No less than 20 developed countries are members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), including Great Britain, the France, Germany, the United States, Japan and Canada are also experiencing a pension fund crisis of around US$78 trillion.In fact, a number of countries are estimated to have funding obligations public pensions of over 300% of gross domestic product,” Bamsoet explained.

He explained that since its inception, the PPI has echoed a lofty vision, linked to well-being, social protection, income security and individual capacity, in order to achieve respect , the protection and realization of the right to life of retired civil servants. In accordance with Presidential Regulation Number 98 of 2021 regarding the National Strategy for Aging, which was issued to create independent, prosperous and useful Indonesian seniors.

“Although still very young, PPI’s presence has become an oasis that satisfies the thirst of many retired public servants who yearn for an organizational platform where they can continue to work. Retirement is the culmination of dedication after years of work, but retirement is not a barrier that prevents us from continuing to contribute to development,” concluded Bamsoet.
