LIVE the world – The Canadian government on Friday, Feb. 3, 2023, imposed sanctions on 38 individuals and 16 institutions it deemed “involved in spreading Russian disinformation and propaganda,” prompting immediate promises of retaliation from Moscow.
Among those sanctioned are Russian media group MIA Rossiya Segodnya and singer Nikolai Baskov, who performed at a properang concert in Moscow, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
“President Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine is based on lies and schemes. Russia’s disinformation operations turn to celebrities and so-called news outlets that echo Kremlin talking points and attempt to justify the atrocities taking place across Ukraine,” he said.
Canada, one of Ukraine’s most vocal international backers, has sanctioned nearly 4,000 individuals and institutions from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus since 2014. Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov , said Moscow would respond to the sanctions in a reciprocal manner.
“We will respond to any hostile action by Canadian authorities at this time, which we regret,” he told Russian news agency RIA. (Ant/Enter)
