LIVE the world — Four foreign ministers from Europe and Canada joined the United States on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023, in opposing a decision by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to approve nine Jewish settlement outposts in Occupied West Bank.
The foreign ministers of Britain, France, Germany, Italy and the United States issued a joint statement expressing concern over the Israeli plan announced on Sunday (2/12).
“We strongly oppose any unilateral action that will only heighten tensions between Israelis and Palestinians and undermine efforts to reach a negotiated two-state solution,” the joint statement said.
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said Ottawa also strongly opposes Israeli settlement expansion, adding that “such unilateral actions undermine efforts to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace.”
On Sunday, Israel approved the retroactive clearance of nine settlement outposts in the West Bank.
Israel also announced the construction of new homes in existing settlements. This caused US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to say he was very worried.
