Badminton News: Indian badminton players PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth recorded contrasting wins in their respective first round matches at the Spain Masters badminton tournament in Madrid on Wednesday.
However, men’s doubles duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty withdrew from the tournament after picking up injuries in their first round match.
Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu advanced to the second round after defeating Swiss representative Jenjira Stadelmann 21-10 21-4.
World Championship silver medalist Srikanth struggled to beat Thailand’s Sitthikom Thammassin 21-11, 25-27, 23-21 in another 32-game round.
Indian duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag take on Japanese duo Ayato Endo and Yuta Takei, just three days after winning the historic Swiss Open title, in their last 32 encounters.
The Indian pair withdrew following what appeared to be a knee injury to Satwiksairaj who was seen talking to the officials and turning their attention to his left knee. It was during the first break of the game and India trailed 9-11.
Meanwhile, Aakarshi Kashyap beat Canada’s sixth seed Michelle Li 12-21, 21-15, 21-18 in her first round match, while Ashmita Chaliha beat French representative Leonice Huet 21- 12, 22-20.
Women’s doubles pair Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand lost in the first round to Japanese pair Rena Miyaura/Ayako Sakuramoto.
In the other men’s singles match, B Sai Praneeth defeated Jan Louda 21-16, 18-21, 21-12. Priyanshu Rajawat won the men’s singles match against Victor Svendsen 18-21, 21-16, 21-11, while Kiran George beat compatriot Mithun Manjunath 21-16, 21-14.
