Three heliskiers die in an avalanche in the Kootenay Rockies, Canada western part, Thursday (2/3). All three are foreign citizens.

City of AFP, police said, bringing the total death toll from avalanches this season to 12. During this time, four people, including a guide, were injured.

They were part of a group of 10 and were trapped in an avalanche Wednesday (1/3) afternoon in the Panama Mountain Resort area, about 160 kilometers west of Calgary.

Police said the injured were in serious condition being airlifted to a hospital in Invermere.

This winter has been one of the worst due to avalanche deaths in the province of British Columbia, the westernmost part of Canada.

Two off-duty cops and two brothers from Pennsylvania were among the dead.

Avalanche risk in Canada has been rated since early January. This is due to unstable snowdrifts.
