JAKARTA – Australia officially bans Chinese video-sharing app TikTok. As is known, Australia is a Five Eyes security partner, in addition to the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and New Zealand.

Attorney General Mark Dreyfus said the ban was based on advice from intelligence and security services.

“They are concerned that TikTok poses a cybersecurity and data privacy risk, and that the app could be used to promote pro-Beijing stories and information,” The Week wrote, quoted Thursday (04/06/ 2023).

TikTok is a Chinese technology company Bytedance. The company has long said it does not share data with the Chinese government. In fact, they store US user data on Oracle servers.

Following these accusations, the European Parliament, the European Commission and the 27 members of the Council of the European Union banned TikTok. They also asked lawmakers and staff to remove the TikTok app from their phones.

In early March, the United States even gave government agencies 30 days to remove TikTok from federal devices and systems. However, the ban only applies to the machinery of government.

Responding to the ban, TikTok’s managing director for Australia, Lee Hunter, said he was disappointed and protested.

“We are very disappointed with this decision, as this policy is driven by politics, not facts. Once again, we emphasize that there is no evidence to suggest that TikTok poses a security risk,” he explained.

He also hopes the Australian government treats all businesses fairly, regardless of their country of origin.
