The Mizan online court site in Iran reported information about the sentencing on Sunday (4/16/2023).
Iranian troops shot down the flight Ukraine International Airlines PS752 shortly after takeoff from Tehran on January 8, 2020.
The tragedy killed all 176 people on board. Most are Iranian and Canadian, many of whom have dual nationality.
Mizan reported that a commander received the heaviest sentence of 10 years in prison for violating an order to shoot down a plane, as reported by CNA, Monday (4/17/2023).
The media reported that the other 9 staff members were sentenced to between one and 3 years in prison.
In addition, the commander of the Tor M-1 surface-to-air missile system fired two missiles at the aircraft, contrary to orders and without obtaining permission.
Three days after the downing of the plane bound for kyiv, the Iranian armed forces acknowledged that a mistake had occurred.
“In view of the effects and consequences of this action, the main defendant was given the maximum sentence,” Mizan Online added, without giving further details, on Sunday (4/16/2023).
After this incident, tensions between Iran and the United States (US) skyrocketed when the plane was shot down.
