PARBOABOA, Jakarta – Men’s doubles duo Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan are the only Indonesian representatives at the 2023 Canada Open badminton tournament.
The tournament will take place from Tuesday July 4 to Sunday July 9, 2023 at the Markin MacPhail Center in Calgary.
Men’s doubles pair Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra are the second seeds in the 2023 Canada Open badminton tournament.
The two are expected to face the pair who passed the third qualifying spot, namely Hooman Bagheri/Derek Yu of Canada or the pair Chen Zhi Yi/Presley Smith of the United States.
The participation of the men’s doubles, nicknamed The Daddies, in the 2023 Canada Open opens the opportunity for both to obtain points towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
It was stated that the Daddies’ performance was trending downward. Where, the last title won by both of them was the 2019 BWF World Tour Final, although they had entered the final at the 2023 All England.
Indonesian representatives also do not have an impressive record at the Canada Open.
The last Indonesian player to become champion of this competition was Taufik Hidayat in 2010.
This super 500 level tournament will bring together big names from the world of badminton such as Kunlavut Vitidsarn and Kodai Naraoka who will meet in the men’s singles event.
Then there is Japan’s top seed, Akane Yamaguchi, who will play the women’s singles number.
Meanwhile, in the top seed of the men’s doubles, there is the Japanese duo Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi who should make it difficult for the Indonesian representatives.
However, the world number one in men’s singles, namely Viktor Axelsen, is confirmed to be absent from the 2023 Canada Open as he has to take a break after becoming champion at the 2023 Indonesia Open.
