Giant e-commerce, Amazonsterminate the employment relationship (layoffs) to 18,000 employees across the US, Canada and Costa Rica Wednesday (1/18) yesterday. Amazon shares fell 1% today, Thursday (1/19).

Meanwhile, under US labor law, companies are required to notify terminated employees 60 days prior to layoff.
According to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) website, Amazon has laid off 2,300 employees in Seattle and Bellevue, United States.
Amazon.com chief executive Andy Jassy said that at the start of January, about 6% of Amazon’s 300,000 employees had been laid off.
He explained that most of those affected by the layoffs were employees of the division e-commerce and human resources.
The move makes Amazon the latest company in the U.S. tech sector to downsize. Massive layoffs have been made since last year to reduce operational costs.
Additionally, layoffs were made to reverse pandemic-era excesses and prepare for deteriorating global economic conditions.
Amazon’s layoffs also go beyond the cuts made by Facebook’s parent company, Meta. Meta has already laid off 11,000 employees.
