Copa America 2024 News: Argentina began their Copa America journey with a solid 2-0 victory over Canada, in the opening match of the tournament hosted in the United States.
This match was in the spotlight due to Alexis Mac Allister’s impressive performance and the injury incident that almost happened to him.
The match started slowly for Argentina who were forced to defend against a Canadian attack led by Alphonso Davies and Liam Millar. Despite this, Mac Allister almost opened the scoring for the Albiceleste in the first half with a header captured by the opposing goalkeeper.
Luck finally followed Mac Allister early in the second half when he provided an assist for Julian Alvarez to give the Albiceleste the lead.
However, the moment almost turned into tragedy when Mac Allister was brutally tackled by Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau. Even though he appeared to be in pain, Mac Allister managed to continue the match and play the full 90 minutes.
Fortunately, a medical examination after the match confirmed that Mac Allister had not suffered a serious injury, which was good news for the Albiceleste given his important role in the team. Meanwhile, Crépeau himself may have been lucky that the incident did not end in a red card.
The match continued to be fierce, Argentina managed to control the match with their second goal scored at the feet of Lautaro Martinez in the 88th minute, after receiving a pass from Lionel Messi.
Albiceleste’s next match is against Chile, where they will try to maintain their form and secure three more important points.
