Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said Wednesday (5/31) that wildfires over the past few days have damaged about 200 homes and buildings and forced the evacuation of 16,000 residents.
Houston advised residents to avoid all activities in the area, such as hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, driving all-terrain vehicles and all commercial activities on government land.
“We must do what we can so that no new fire breaks out,” he stressed, instructed Arab News.
Nova Scotia Forest Protection Officer Scott Tingley said it’s very likely the fires started because of human negligence. He therefore supports Houston’s warning and invites residents to manage it together.
“Most of them are preventable. But accidents happen and that’s why we really appreciate the Prime Minister’s message,” Tingley said.
12 fires were recorded in the Halifax area on Sunday (28/5), then eight fires occurred on Tuesday (30/5) and the last six fires on Wednesday evening (31/5).
In total, some 16,000 people have been ordered to leave their homes in northwest Halifax for the downtown port.
Meanwhile, Sarah Lyon of the Nova Scotia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said an eight-person team would go to the evacuation area to pick up any animals left behind.
