DENPASAR, balipuspanews.com – Bali police have arrested a Canadian fugitive from Interpol named Stéphane Gagnon. The 52-year-old was arrested from his hideout at a villa in Canggu, North Kuta, Badung on Saturday (20/5/2023). It has been revealed that Stephane was involved in a case of pension fund fraud involving 335 people in his country.
Stephane’s arrest was transmitted by Bali Police Public Relations Chief Kombes Satake Bayu Setianto on Sunday (21/5/2023). He explained that this arrest was carried out by the personnel of Unit I of the Sub-Directorate 4 of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on the basis of information from the Canadian police. Until Bali police received a letter from Kadiv Hubinter Polri on May 19, 2023 with the order to arrest the suspect.
According to Kombes Satake, Stéphane has been a fugitive since August 5, 2022. He is wanted by the Canadian government for allegedly committing fraud and forgery crimes against hundreds of people with hundreds of millions of rupees in losses.
“After this arrest, the suspect was detained for 20 days. From May 20, 2023 to June 8, 2023,” he said.
Officer Melati Tiga over the shoulder explained that the suspect had come to live in Bali using a visit visa. Stéphane has been living in Bali for a few months.
He disclosed that the arrest of suspect Stephane was also assisted by Class I Immigration for Ngurah Rai Airport. He will be temporarily detained pending an extradition request from the Government of Canada.
