Bianca Andreescu beats Zeynep Sonmez in ‘s-Hertogenbosch

Tennis News: Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu started the 2023 Libema Open season in ‘s-Hertogenbosch winning in straight sets.

The sixth-seeded tennis player managed to defeat Turkish national Zeynep Sonmez 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the Libema Open.

Facing a player who made it through the qualifying round is never easy in the first round of a tournament and this was faced by the Canadian in the WTA level 250 tournament held in ‘s-Hertogenbosch when she faced Sonmez, 21.

The two tennis players have never met in a WTA tournament before, with the 2019 US Open champion being the favorite when they first met. All of the top seeds who started the Libema Open successfully have won victories, so there could be added pressure for the Canadians when they step onto the court.

Last season Andreescu ended the grass season on a high note and he will certainly be looking to repeat that feat in 2024.

The sixth seed started the first set in the first three games, beat Sonmez twice and cemented his early dominance. But the response from the Turkish national was quick and she even had a chance to equalize by creating three break point chances in the sixth game of the first set.

However, the Canadian used her experience to save all three break point chances before taking the first set without further drama.

The second set continued much the same after Sonmez took a step closer to an upset. After trailing 1-3, he managed to turn things around and take a 4-3, 40/30 lead.

However, that effort was not strong enough to defeat Andreescu, who had won the last three matches and booked a second-round match at the Libema Open against Slovak Viktoria Hruncakova, who beat Switzerland’s Susan Bandecchi 6- 4, 6-2.

Meanwhile, American tennis player Ashlyn Krueger will face third seed Viktoria Azarenka in the second round thanks to a landslide 6-1, 6-2 win over Swedish tennis player Rebecca Peterson.

In other action, Polina Kudermetova also performed well as she beat Yuan Yeu 6-4, 6-3 and will challenge second seed and compatriot Liudmila Samsonova.
