Tennis News: Canadian fans are thrilled after favorite Bianca Andreescu cooled down one of the hottest players in recent times in the first round of the Canadian Open (Rogers Cup) in Toronto 2022 season.
The 2019 Canadian Open champion defeated 11th seed Daria Kasatkina 7-6, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the WTA 1000-level tournament for the third time in her career.
The win was the 2019 US Open champion’s tenth win over a top 10 player. She picked up eight player-ranked wins during a breakthrough 2019 season, but only added to that collection at the start of this season when she finally picked up her ninth win after beating Danielle Rose. Collins in Madrid.
Meanwhile, with a win in the first round of this week’s Canadian Open, the hosts increasingly outscored Kasatkina at 3-0 head-to-head. The 11th seed moved up to No.9 in the world this week after winning in San Jose last week, but the hosts maintained their unbeaten streak against the 11th seed after struggling for 2 hours and 30 minutes.
“I’m very happy with my composure,” said Andreescu, who finished the match with 31 winners, a far cry from Kasatkina’s 18 winners.
“That’s what I did in the last two meetings against Kasatkina. I stay as calm as possible. Of course, be consistent, but also aggressive, because you don’t always want to be involved in long rallies against him, because he really likes it.”
The first set itself lasted 85 minutes after both players hesitated to give in, so they had to go into the deciding round. In the tie-break, the hosts came back from a third clear before eventually winning the set, despite requesting a medical break at the start of the first set.
The set going up and down again happened in the second set, but this time Andreescu didn’t let the set go into the tiebreak and won it in the tenth game.
In the second round of the Canadian Open, Andreescu will face France’s Alize Cornet who won her two previous encounters in straight sets, the Berlin encounter last season and the next two weeks at Wimbledon.
