Borussia Dortmund reached the semi-finals of the Champions League after an exhilarating 4-2 victory over Atletico Madrid.
Dortmund suffered for long periods in the first leg but continued from where they left off and had help from the incredible Signal Iduna Park crowd.
Edin Terzic’s side took the lead on the night when Mats Hummels sent a brilliant ball past Julian Brandt in the penalty area. The German took a touch before getting the better of Jan Oblak, who really should have done better.
The Bundesliga club then took the lead on aggregate through Ian Maatsen. Marcel Sabitzer played the ball back to Maatsen, who touched the ball before finding the bottom right corner beautifully.

Dortmund | 4 (5) | Brandt 34′, Maatsen 39′, Fullkrug 71′, Sabitzer 74′ |
Atlético | 2 (4) | Hummels (OG) 49′, Correa 65′ |
Atleti were not going to go down without a fight, however. Mario Hermoso won a header at the far post and Hummels tried to clear but ended up poking the ball into his own net early in the second half.
Angel Correa had a great opportunity to take the lead as he looked to slide a ball past Gregor Kobel, but he only went inches past. Diego Simeone fell to the ground, hands covering his face in disbelief.
Correa turned his fellow Argentine’s frown upside down moments later. Antoine Griezmann’s effort from the left was parried into the path of Correa, whose first effort from the rebound was blocked on the line, but he followed it up by smashing it into the roof of the net.
Brandt then immediately put Dortmund on the attack and played a through ball down the left for Sabitzer to loop to Niclas Fullkrug, who guided his header towards the far corner and the ball went in off the post. This left Simeone calling for calm on his part.
These instructions fell on deaf ears as Atleti then conceded the goal that sealed Dortmund’s place in the semi-final. Sabitzer collected the ball on the edge of the D before hitting the box and shooting past Oblak. He got his hands dirty, but the Austrian international’s precision was too much for the Atleti goalkeeper to handle.
Simeone has been left scratching his head as competition where he has been one of the enduring presences of this era that has once again eluded him.
