Prime Minister Justin Trudeau blamed Indian government agents for the murder of a Sikh community leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in June in Canada.

In an emergency declaration to the Canadian Parliament, Trudeau said his party was investigating possible links between the Indian government and the killing of Nijjar, who had gone into exile and lived in British Columbia for years.

“Canadian security agencies are actively investigating credible allegations regarding possible links between Indian government agents and Nijjar’s death,” Trudeau said in a statement on Monday (9/18).

Trudeau said any involvement by a foreign government in the murder of Canadian citizens was an “unacceptable violation of our sovereignty.”

Trudeau even said he discussed Nijjar’s killing directly with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi last week.

On that occasion, Trudeau admitted to urging the Indian government to “work with Canada to resolve this issue.”

“Canada has expressed its deep concerns to the Indian government’s top intelligence and security officials. Last week, at the G20, I expressed these concerns personally and directly to Prime Minister Modi in clear terms,” he said. he declared, quoted by Reuters.

In addition to making accusations, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly also expelled the top Indian diplomat in her country. However, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa has not yet ruled on this expulsion.

Nijjar (45) was shot dead in front of a Sikh temple on June 18 in Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver. The Modi government has long protested the activities of the Sikh community, which India considers a separatist group.
