Tennis News: Davis Cup champions for the 2022 season, Canada are once again on the verge of appearing in Malaga after crushing Finland 3-0 in Group D which took place in Manchester.
Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov opened the match by winning 7-6, 6-2 against Finnish tennis player Eero Vasa.
Ranked 703rd in the world in tennis, Vasa was impressive in his two matches in Manchester. After pinning Britain’s Daniel Evans in a tight first set in his previous match, he tested the Canadian with big serves and stunning groundstrokes. However, the Canadian tennis player managed to overcome him.
“It means a lot to be back after missing the Davis Cup last season,” said Shapovalov, who now has 12 wins in the men’s team competition.
“Representing Canada always means a lot and it was probably one of the most fun weeks we’ve had at the tournament.”
Auger Aliassime then extended Canada’s lead with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over Finnish tennis player Otto Virtanen, the player’s second win this week in Manchester.
The two Canadian tennis hopefuls have progressed simultaneously in their careers, notably winning the junior Davis Cup title in 2015 before winning the senior title of the competition two seasons ago.
“I remember we had an under-12 competition in Calgary and I won it. Then I remember the under-14 game and he beat me 6-0, 6-0 in Canada,” said Auger Aliassime.
“I don’t even remember what happened. This guy, blond hair, little bandana, how did it happen! He hit him so hard. We have an incredible history together, so to be able to play this competition together now is just crazy.”
It didn’t stop there, Auger Aliassime and Shapovalov returned to the court and claimed another 6-2, 7-5 victory over Virtanen and Harri Heliovaara.
“We couldn’t ask for anything more,” said Canadian team captain Frank Dancevic. “It’s never easy to win a Davis Cup match and Denis has had a positive start. He’s not feeling 100 per cent but he’s finding a way to get through it.”
“Felix showed a stunning performance in singles and both of them performed even better in doubles. It’s phenomenal. I can’t ask for much as captain.
