PARIS – Vanessa Giles scored the winner in extra time as the Canadian women’s soccer team beat France 2-1 at the Paris Olympics on Sunday.

Giles pounced on the rebound before his left-footed shot sailed wide of the post to keep Canada’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the tournament alive.

Marie-Antoinette Cototo scored for the home team in the 42nd minute and captain Jesse Fleming scored for Canada in the 58th minute.

Canada beat New Zealand 2-1 in their Group A opener last Thursday but were then stripped of six points by FIFA over Canada Soccer’s drone spying scandal.

A member of the team’s coaching staff was caught using a drone to film New Zealand’s training before the start of the tournament. The Canadian Olympic Committee said it was considering an appeal.

Currently, Canada’s maximum points total in the group stage is three points, provided the defending champions beat Colombia in Nice on Wednesday.
