Canada calls on Israel to investigate Gaza water plant explosion

JAKARTA- Canadian International Development Minister Ahmed Hussen said his party demands that Israel investigate the destruction of a vital water facility in the southern Gaza Strip, known as the Canada Well.

“Canada has been in contact with the Israeli government to obtain further information about the incident and we demand an investigation,” spokeswoman Olivia Batten said, according to the national news agency The Canadian Press reported by ANTARA on Friday, August 16.

In late July, images shared by the Israeli military on social media showed a water supply facility blown up with explosives.

While the Israeli military has said it is investigating what happened at the site where hundreds of Palestinians were being housed, Batten said that “the well is located in Tel al-Sultan, where Canada has played an important role in improving the quality of life for the community.”

Batten said the destruction of water wells worsens “an already poor water infrastructure” while “increasing the difficulties civilians face in accessing clean water.”

“The risk of famine and widespread disease continues to rise and is exacerbated by the destruction of medical, humanitarian and civilian infrastructure like this,” he added.

Israel, which is defying a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire, faces international condemnation amid continued brutal attacks on Gaza since an October 7 attack last year by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas.

The attacks killed more than 40,000 people, mostly women and children, and injured more than 92,400, according to local health authorities.

More than 10 months after the Israeli offensive, much of Gaza has been devastated by a crippling blockade of food, clean water and medicine.

Israel, accused of genocide by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), has been ordered to immediately halt its military operations in the southern town of Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians sought refuge from the war before it was finally attacked on May 6.
