Canada considers expelling Chinese diplomat after he tried to intimidate MPs

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said her party was still discussing various options to respond to the report, including expulsion.

“My deputy minister is currently meeting with the Chinese ambassador and summoning him, and we are also evaluating various options, including the expulsion of the diplomat,” Joly said at a parliamentary committee meeting on Thursday (4/5).

Based on intelligence reports, the Chinese diplomat attempted to track down conservative MP Michael Chong’s family in Hong Kong to intimidate them.

This came after Chong supported a motion in Parliament declaring that China’s treatment of Xinjiang’s Uyghur Muslim minority constituted genocide.

The intelligence report was released by Globe and Mail earlier this week. However, the Chinese consulate in Toronto denied this information.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was aware of the newspaper’s intelligence report. On Wednesday (3/5), Trudeau criticized intelligence officials for not giving him the report at the time.
