Canada considers expelling Chinese diplomat after trying to intimidate MP

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said she was still discussing various options for responding to the report, including deportation.

“My deputy minister is currently meeting with the Chinese ambassador and summoning him, and we are also evaluating various options, including the expulsion of the diplomat,” Joly told a parliamentary committee meeting on Thursday (4/5).

Based on intelligence reports, the Chinese diplomat tried to track down Conservative MP Michael Chong’s family in Hong Kong to intimidate them.

It came after Chong backed a motion in parliament declaring China’s treatment of the Uyghur Muslim minority in Xinjiang amounted to genocide.

The intelligence report was published by Globe and Mail earlier this week. But the Chinese consulate in Toronto denied the information.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he read the intelligence reports in the newspapers. On Wednesday, Trudeau blamed intelligence officials for not giving him the report at the time.
